Sit-at-home: Tension in Anambra as Gov. Soludo’s Directive Begins

There have been series of civil unrest in Anambra State as Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has issued a directive that the Monday sit-at-home must end on October 15, 2024.

During the Governor's visit to the commercial hub of the state (Onitsha), he threatened to seal any shop or plaza that fails to open on Mondays in the name of sit-at-home.

Many traders who spoke yesterday affirmed that they will obey the order if appropriate security is put in place in the markets.

The governor had complained about the continued shunning of work on Mondays in the Southeast zone, contending that the zone loses an estimated N19.6 billion every Monday.

It would be recalled that the leadership of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, had, in August 2021, introduced sit-at-home orders every Monday all over the South East geopolitical zone to pressure the Nigerian government to release its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

IPOB later dismissed the order, opting for it to be executed only on days Kanu would appear in court.

But in spite of the suspension, residents of the five South East states of Anambra, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, and Enugu have been compelled to observe the Monday sit-at-home order out of fear.

Although IPOB had repeatedly renounced the Monday sit-at-home all over the zone, stating that those who still imposed the order were armed robbers.

Trying to blackmail the Biafra agitators, a faction of the group led by Finland-based Mazi Simon Ekpa has continued to announce the sit-at-home in the zone, with threats to kill and maim the violators.

Worried by the absence of commercial activities in the ever-busy business capital of the state, Soludo said, “From now on, every Monday, the main market must be open for business. If you fail to open, your shop will be sealed for one week, and if necessary, for up to one month. When you are ready to open, it must be from Monday through Saturday.”
