During an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday, the SEMA's Director-General, Mr. Barkindo Mohammed, announced that the Borno State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has successfully rescued 3,683 individuals trapped in their homes due to severe flooding in Maiduguri.
As of 5 PM on Thursday, SEMA's ongoing rescue operations have involved various methods, including the use of boats, canoes, divers, military assistance, and fire service trucks.
Mohammed highlighted that the agency is focusing its efforts on responding to distress calls as floodwaters begin to recede. He indicated that search and rescue operations would continue over the weekend.
The flooding has had a devastating impact, affecting approximately two million people in the region.
In response, SEMA has established 14 official camps, along with several informal ones, to accommodate displaced individuals.
The Federal Government has allocated N3 billion to support the state's recovery efforts, which Governor Babagana Zulum has supplemented with additional funds.
The flooding was triggered by the collapse of the Alau dam on the Ngadda River earlier this week, marking one of the most severe flooding events in the state's history.
Officials have noted that the dam was at full capacity due to unusually heavy rainfall, and there are concerns that the death toll may continue to rise as the situation develops.
The Nigerian Air Force has also initiated medical outreach efforts to assist flood victims, providing essential medical care and supplies.
