Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, recently issued a stern warning to criminal gangs causing chaos in various parts of the state, urging them to surrender their arms or face severe consequences.
The Commissioner's statement came during a meeting with the Orashi National Congress, led by its President General, Emeni Ibe, at the police headquarters in Port Harcourt.
He referenced the fate of Gift Okpara, also known as 2Baba, the prime suspect in the brutal murder of former Divisional Police Officer of Ahoada Division, Bako Angbashim, in Odiemudie community, Ahoada East Local Government Area of the state in September.
2Baba, the wanted leader of the Iceland cult group, was killed during a joint security raid on one of his hideouts in Ebrass forest in Ahoada West LGA on February 19.
Disu emphasized the need for armed miscreants to turn in their arms, as the police had information about them and would apprehend them soon. He highlighted 2Baba's network of informants and expressed dismay at the lack of recognition for the efforts put in by policemen in protecting lives and property.
The Commissioner condemned the act of taking another person's life, especially that of a law enforcement officer, stating that such actions would not be tolerated. He reiterated the government's stance on dealing decisively with anyone who kills a citizen or a law enforcement agent, emphasizing the commitment of the Rivers State Police Command to pursue and apprehend criminals.
Disu recalled his visit to Ahoada and the area where the former DPO was killed, stating that he had promised to find the killers of the police officer. He praised the officers for their dedication and efforts, noting that the successful operation to apprehend 2Baba was a result of their commitment.
He thanked the Orashi National Congress and the community for their support and assistance in the operation.
He also acknowledged the guidance and support of the governor and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) in ensuring the success of the operation.
In response, President General Ibe expressed gratitude for the Commissioner's efforts and achievements since assuming office, particularly in apprehending 2Baba and recovering his corpse.
He presented Disu with an award of honor on behalf of the Orashi Region, comprising Abua/Odua, Ahoada East, Ahoada West, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni LGAs, to appreciate his outstanding performance as Commissioner of Police.
The visit and award from the Orashi National Congress served as a morale booster for the Rivers State Police Command, highlighting the community's recognition and appreciation for their efforts in maintaining law and order in the state.
