Refuse Burning Triggers ‘Minor Explosion’ at Ikeja Army Cantonment

The explosion, which occurred on a farmland near the Mammy Market, is believed to have been caused by a farmer burning waste and other combustible debris on the land.

An explosion wich occured in the Nigerian Army Cantonment, Ikeja on Monday, April 1, 2024, has been described by the Army as ''minor''. This is contained in a press statement signed by Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, Director of Army Public Relations.

According to the statement, the explosion, which occurred on a farmland near the Mammy Market, is believed to have been caused by a farmer burning waste and other combustible debris on the land.

Although there were no reported casualties, the Nigerian Army Engineers Explosive Ordinance Disposal team sealed off the area for further investigation.

In December 2023, the Cantonment had been certified free of unexploded ordinances following the recovery and detonation of over 2000 UXOs during the "Exercise Clean Sweep" operation.
Meanwhile, residents have been advised to remain calm.
