Mr. Olumide Akpata, Labour Party governorship candidate in the September 21 poll in Edo State, has expressed his readiness to support the August 1, 2024, protest, but urged the protesters to be peaceful in articulating their anger.

He tasked the security forces to exercise restraint and be professional in managing the protests. Akpata, in a statement yesterday, said: The planned nationwide protests by citizens of the Federal Republic of Nigeria scheduled for August 2024 have sparked intense debate and widespread attention across both traditional and social media platforms.

The planned protests have sparked a range of responses from Nigerians as citizens aim to address perceived government failures. It is crucial to stress that the right to peaceful assembly and free expression, including the right of citizens to protest, are fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

As citizens of this great nation, we have a right and responsibility to protest when conditions demand it. I fully support the planned protests as a platform for citizens to express their concerns peacefully. Speculating about who is funding the protest is irrelevant; the real issue is the dire economic situation facing many Nigerians, which has created a desperate need for change.

Nigerians have shown remarkable patience and resilience in enduring these hardships. I urge the protesters to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully. The integrity of your cause depends on upholding the democratic principles you aim to defend.

Remain peaceful and obedient, even in the face of potential challenge. Your conduct during these protests will speak volumes about the depth of your convictions and the strength of our democracy.

I encourage our security forces to handle these protests with maximum restraint and professionalism. Your primary responsibility is to protect and serve the citizens of Nigeria, including those protesting peacefully.
