According to the petitioner, these officers claimed that a substantial portion of the extorted funds, specifically N30 million, was intended for the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Egbetokun, and N16 million for the Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Polycarp Abonyi. Additionally, it was asserted that the officers confiscated a gold necklace from Davison, valued at N4 million.
In an official communication released recently, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, emphasized the commitment to conducting a fair and impartial investigation. The complainant, who raised these grave allegations, will be contacted to provide further relevant information to assist in the ongoing inquiry.
Israel Joe, in his petition dated September 21 and duly endorsed by the office of the Inspector-General of Police, disclosed that on September 14, 2023, the police conducted a search at Davison's residence in Peace Avenue Road, Egbelu, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State. During the search, they uncovered both local and foreign currencies totaling N100 million, which was designated for payment to personnel safeguarding pipeline facilities in the Niger Delta.
Despite evidence indicating the funds' legitimate purpose, the police confiscated the money, two automobiles, and the aforementioned gold necklace. Four individuals found at Davison's residence, including one female, were arrested during this operation.
According to Joe, during a conversation with the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, the officer cited an alleged kidnapping case as the reason for the investigation. He further explained that the police indicated an intention to manage the situation by seizing the funds. Notably, the police suggested sending N30 million to the Inspector-General and N16 million to the state Commissioner of Police.
Subsequently, the police did release two vehicles and N12 million to Davison but retained N80 million, his gold chain, valued at N4 million, two plasma televisions, and personal belongings seized from his residence.
Israel Joe has called for a thorough investigation into this matter, urging the reimbursement of the confiscated funds and the accountability of all involved officers.
In response to these grave allegations, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, stated that the officers implicated in the petition are currently being interrogated by the IGP Monitoring Unit.
