The Imo State Police Command apprehended five persons who were alleged to be members of a cult group.
It was gathered that the police arrested the alleged cultists during an intelligence-led operation at Irete, Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State.
In a press statement approved by the command’s spokesman, Henry Okoye, and issued to journalists on Sunday, he said, “The culprits, identified as Michael Chukwuemeka, 23, from Umuokwu Izombe in Oguta Local Government Area (LGA); Mariano Daniel, 24, from Delta State; Uche Ibejiako, 26, from Owerri Municipal; and Annointing Ezeh, 23, from Umugada Irete in Owerri West LGA, were arrested due to a strategic operation designed to eradicate cult-related cases within the state.
The four people who were arrested admitted that they were part of the Black Axe gang, a criminal group. The police have commenced an investigation to find out more about what they did wrong. After the investigation is concluded, they will be taken to court.
Addressing newsmen, Aboki Danjuma, the state commissioner of police, called on the residents of the state to assist law enforcement agencies. He said, “Continue supporting our efforts to combat crime by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” stating that such combined efforts are “important in maintaining peace and security all over the state.”
On July 27, 2024, the state command also apprehended a suspected cultist, Chibueze Kalu, and found one locally made pistol from the 25-year-old.
Kalu admitted that he was part of the Black Axe Gang.
