Anti-cult operatives assigned to the Obiaruku Police Division in Delta State's Ukwuani Local Government Area allegedly chased a 17-year-old boy, Sylvester Watermelon, to his death.
The deceased and a friend had just exited the medicine shop where they had gone to buy medications when the tragic incidence occurred on Wednesday.
It was learned that they spotted the anti-cult Operatives and fled on a motorcycle, but they were pursued until they smashed into a wall and collapsed unconscious.
The anti-cult operatives rushed them to the station, where his friend regained consciousness. However, Sylvester Watermelon passed away.
The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Wale Abass, has reportedly ordered the arrest of the anti-cult operatives.
We have learned that the suspects are being held in the Asaba Police Command as of the time of this report.
The anti-cult operatives' actions were condemned by human rights activist Comrade Kelvin Ejumudo in a statement.
"This rascality by men of the vigilante and anti-cult groups attached to police formations needs to be checked before it gets out of hand and causes unrest in the state," he said.
"No Nigerian youth should die in this manner." If one person is hurt, we are all hurt.
DSP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Public Relations Officer, has not yet returned calls. In addition, a text message asking him to confirm the report has gone unanswered.
