The Plateau State Government has declared a 48-hour curfew across the Jos North Local Government Area following a deadly attack in the Angwan Rukuba community.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Joyce Ramnap, the state commissioner for information and communication, the curfew would take effect from midnight on March 29 to April 1, 2026.

Authorities said the move was prompted by a “tragic security incident” in the area, which claimed lives and left many wounded.

“Following the tragic security incident that occurred at Gari Ya Waye community, Angwan Rukuba, today, Sunday, 29th March 2026, resulting in the loss of lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries.

“‎The Plateau State Government, in conjunction with security agencies, wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within the Jos North Local Government Area with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang has condemned the attack, describing it as a "barbaric and unprovoked" act, stating that a manhunt is underway to bring those responsible to justice.

The locals had earlier informed journalists that gunmen stormed the community with motorcycles on Sunday evening, shooting at passersby.

A resident identified as John Caleb said, “We have been badly hit in Angwa by unknown gunmen. So far, six people have been confirmed dead, and several other casualties are at the Luna Hospital by New Road. It’s very unfortunate.”

Describing the incident as 'strange', another resident, Janet Pam, explained that she initially ignored the sound of gunshots only to discover that gunmen were shooting at people.

Pam said, “While at my house in Angwa, I heard the first gunshot.

“At first, I ignored the sound, but when I heard it the second time. I came outside only to find out that it was gunmen on bikes shooting at people.

“They targeted those moving on the road and those selling by the roadside. Among those shot dead was my neighbour, who was returning from the evening church service.

“So far, we have counted six persons who were killed during the incident. I have never seen anything like this before. This is pure terrorism.”

She noted that the gunmen fled the scene on motorcycles before security personnel arrived.

Pam said the incident had sparked widespread fear in the community, with residents calling on the government to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles in the Jos and Bukuru metropolises.

It was gathered that some youths, angered by the attack, blocked the road in the area but were later dispersed by security operatives.

Plateau State has witnessed a resurgence of violent attacks in recent months, particularly in rural communities and parts of Jos North Local Government Area.
