The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared the FCT off-limits for the planned hunger protests on August 1st.
Wike made this statement following a security briefing in the capital on Thursday.
Speaking with journalists, Wike declared, "To those who wish to protest on August 1st, the FCT is not available for any type of protest. "We will not allow it."
He explained that the day has been set aside for celebrations and the presentation of certificates to the Chairmen of the six Area Councils and traditional rulers.
While acknowledging the freedom to protest, Wike stressed that it must be conducted within the law. He asked Nigerians to work together to overcome the country's challenges. "We know that it is a very difficult period for the citizens, but we urge Nigerians to be patient," he said.
Earlier, Wike paid a visit to the Saburi community, urging residents to avoid the hunger protests and not associate with protesters. He called for patience, assuring the community that the difficult times would soon be history.
The Minister further promised to construct a police station in Saburi and encouraged the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, to establish a primary healthcare facility in the community.
