Dino Melaye, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor in Kogi State, revealed in a recent interview on Arise TV how former first lady Patience Jonathan supported Nyesom Wike in his bid to lead River State.
Melaye further claimed that Wike's political rise was aided by previous Rivers State governors Rotimi Amaechi and Peter Odili.
He stated, “Governor Odili made him chairman of his local government. So he has been helped by somebody. After Governor Odili helped him, Governor Amaechi made him chief of staff. Governor Amaechi helped him. Governor Amaechi nominated him to be a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Governor Amaechi helped him. Mrs Goodluck Jonathan spent her money, her connection and everything to make him the Governor of Rivers State.”
Patience Jonathan "spent her money, connection, and everything she had," according to Melaye, to guarantee Wike's win in the gubernatorial race. Also, according to the former MP, Odili helped Wike become the head of his local government.
Melaye's comments shed light on the importance of powerful individuals in Nigerian politics as well as the dynamics of patronage and influence.
Melaye says that while everyone receives assistance during their political careers, that help should not be used as a tool for dominance and control.
