Ministries in Osun State, along with religious bodies, civil society organizations, and security agencies, have pledged to end sexual and gender-based violence against women and girls with disabilities.
This commitment was made during the Institutionalization of Community Task Force and Sign-Off of the Technical Action and Sustainability Plan (TASP) on Prevention and Response to Women and Girls With Disabilities in Osogbo, organized by the Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN).
CEWHIN Director Atinuke Odukoya explained that the plan aims to protect women and girls with disabilities from abuse and create a safe environment for them.
The project involves collaboration among key institutions to prevent gender-based violence. The three-year project seeks to ensure sustainable protection measures beyond its duration.
Traditional ruler Oba Dr. Adedokun Abolarin emphasized the need for coordinated efforts to protect vulnerable groups and urged traditional authorities to refrain from interfering in rape cases.
Chairman of the House Committee on Youth, Sports and Special Needs, Abiola Awoyeye, and Stephen Olufemi, Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities, praised the initiative and called for swift implementation.
Supported by the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women, the CEWHIN project aims to safeguard women and girls with disabilities nationwide. Task force members were introduced, and stakeholders were urged to fulfill their commitments under the TASP.
