In a tragic incident that unfolded on Tuesday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one individual lost their life, while seven others sustained injuries in a collision near the Magboro Bus Stop situated in the Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State.
The mishap, involving two trucks and two buses, was reportedly triggered by a combination of brake failure and excessive speeding, leading to a loss of control over the vehicles involved.
A witness to the incident, Chinyere, recounted the harrowing details, stating, “The truck rammed into one yellow bus. About four vehicles were involved in the accident. After the truck collided with the bus, they all swerved into the street that led to the market. It was only God that helped the situation; many people would have died.”
Further shedding light on the sequence of events, Lawal Alihu, another eyewitness, provided insight, saying, “Two loaded trucks were coming from Lagos and one was trying to overtake the other. Meanwhile, some cars that were moving inward Magboro had already lined up on one lane coming down from the expressway, while buses coming from Lagos were dropping passengers, and in the process, the truck rammed over the bus.”
Confirming the distressing incident, Florence Okpe, the Public Relations Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for Ogun State, disclosed, “The incident happened around 1630hrs at Magboro bus stop. Twenty-two people were involved in the accident, seven people were injured, while one person died.”
In an official statement made available to the press, Florence attributed the cause of the accident to brake failure and excessive speed. The repercussions of this unfortunate event serve as a stark reminder of the critical importance of road safety measures to prevent such devastating occurrences on our highways.
