The Ondo State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has appealed to the state government to enhance welfare packages for healthcare professionals, aiming to curb the high rate of medical professionals leaving the country, a trend often referred to as “japa.”

During a press briefing in Akure marking the 2024 Physicians Week, the NMA State Chairman, Dr. Olumuyiwa Alonge, highlighted that poor working conditions and inconsistent salaries have fuelled the ongoing exodus. He called on the government to implement the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) across all healthcare sectors in the state, ensuring consistent and fair remuneration.

This year’s Physicians Week, themed “Ensuring Universal Applicability in Remuneration: A Panacea to Talent Retention in the Healthcare System,” included discussions on mitigating the impact of infectious diseases, such as monkeypox, and advancing early breast cancer detection and treatment.

Dr. Alonge explained that equitable pay is essential for maintaining morale and dedication within the healthcare profession. "Fair remuneration is more than a paycheck; it acknowledges the emotional and physical toll of healthcare work. When healthcare professionals are fairly compensated, it enhances their commitment to patient care and strengthens the entire health system," he said.

Dr. Alonge also noted that many healthcare professionals face long hours, low pay, and inconsistent salaries, often with significant variations even among similar institutions. These conditions discourage young, talented individuals from entering or remaining in the workforce, further straining the healthcare system.

In addition to salary improvements, Dr. Alonge urged the government to enhance working conditions to help retain healthcare talent within the state, addressing the larger issues contributing to the ongoing brain drain.
