Former Osun State Commissioner for Works, Engr. Remi Omowaiye, has challenged Governor Ademola Adeleke’s administration to make public any technical report that faults the Olaiya Flyover, urging the government not to politicize state resources.
The flyover, constructed under the Adegboyega Oyetola-led administration in 2022, has recently been subject to scrutiny after the current government banned heavy-duty trucks from using it, citing safety concerns from a technical report.
Speaking at the Tinubu-Shettima campaign office in Osogbo, Omowaiye defended the quality of the flyover, stating that the project was executed by a top-tier contractor with experience across multiple states. He expressed frustration over the neglect of the flyover’s beautification structures, alleging that the current government was attempting to undermine Oyetola’s legacy.
“We carried out various tests in labs at FUTA, the University of Lagos, and Lagos State Materials Testing Lab, and the results were conclusive,” Omowaiye said. “The structure's capacity is solid. I challenge any engineer or the state government to present a report proving otherwise, with verifiable evidence.”
Omowaiye's remarks came in response to Governor Adeleke's directive to restrict heavy trucks from using the flyover due to safety concerns. The governor ordered the Ministry of Works to erect barriers and issue travel advisories to ensure public safety while a detailed technical review of the bridge’s condition is conducted.
Adeleke reassured the public that the move was precautionary and aimed at protecting both citizens and state infrastructure.
