Ohanaeze Confirms Rivers State for Next President General

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, also known as the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, has reiterated that Rivers State will produce the next President General in line with its constitutional provision for rotating the office among member states.

To make this a reality, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of Ohanaeze has urged the Secretary General to convene a meeting of Ime Obi, the group’s highest decision-making body, to set up an electoral panel for conducting the election next month.

This decision dispels speculation and tension in some quarters suggesting that the Ohanaeze leadership intended to disrupt the constitutional zoning arrangement.

Rising from a meeting in Enugu on Wednesday, Ohanaeze stressed its dedication to the zoning principle. Preparations for the January 2025 election are set to start instantly.

According to a press statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Chiedozie Alex Ogbonnia, the NEC declared:

“The NEC reiterated the dedication to the provisions of the Ohanaeze constitution, to the effect that it is the turn of Rivers State to produce the next President General for Ohanaeze Ndigbo come January 2025.

The NEC conveyed gratitude to the Igbo community for their steadfast assistance and appealed for understanding, promising all that the January 2025 election would be a success.

Similarly, the meeting applauded the National Burial Committee, chaired by Senator Ben Obi, for successfully organising the funeral of the late President General, Chief Iwuanyanwu. 

The NEC also appreciated the South-East Governors Forum, Igbo leaders, and friends of the Igbo for their cooperation and support during the burial ceremonies.
