A tragic incident has unfolded in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, where a student from Obada Idi-Emi High School, identified as Ariyo, has died following severe punishment from a teacher.
The incident reportedly occurred after Ariyo jokingly remarked that a dustbin brought to class by the teacher was purchased with students' money. This comment allegedly angered the teacher, who then reported the student to the principal.
In response to the principal's directive, the teacher subjected Ariyo to a brutal punishment that included 162 frog jumps and 24 strokes of the cane. Eyewitnesses claim that during this punishment, Ariyo collapsed.
Activist Adetoun, who shared details of the incident on social media, criticized the delay by school staff in taking Ariyo to the hospital for medical care. By the time he received attention, it was too late; he was pronounced dead.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed that Ariyo died on October 25 at the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta.
Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola clarified that while initial reports suggested he received 162 strokes of the cane, he was actually made to perform 162 frog jumps and was caned 24 times. His body has been taken to the Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy as investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death continue.
