NPC Launches VASA Study to Tackle Maternal, Child Mortality
The federal government has initiated a study to probe the remote causes of neonatal and maternal deaths all over the country.
The event, known as the Verbal and Social Autopsy (VASA) study, is made up of data collection from selected local governments, conducted by field workers from the National Population Commission (NPC) and the Federal Ministry of Health.
While speaking in Osogbo at the launch of fieldwork for Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo States, NPC’s National Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, affirmed that VASA is an important survey aimed at identifying the social and health-related factors contributing to under-five and maternal mortality. This data will help inform policies to address these challenges and improve maternal and child health in the country.
Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, represented by the Federal Commissioner for Osun, Dr. Amidu Tadese, advised monarchs to assist the VASA team in achieving its goals. He emphasised that the study would collect important data by conducting interviews with families in selected communities, aiming to understand the circumstances surrounding maternal and child deaths.
“The partnership and support of every individual and community are important in ensuring that this study yields exact and valuable information,” Kwarra affirmed. “We urge traditional and community leaders to mobilise their communities and ensure full involvement.”
Olusola Raheem, who leads the VASA team for Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo States, said that the study had already been completed in Ekiti State. Soon, it will start in 22 local government areas in Osun State and then move to Ondo State.
