The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in Osun State has criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for attempting to obstruct the upcoming local government election scheduled for February 22, 2025.
In a statement released by the NNPP State Chairman, Dr. Tosin Odeyemi, on Monday in Osogbo, the party expressed dismay at the APC's last-minute moves to disrupt the poll. Odeyemi urged the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) to remain resolute and conduct a credible, fair election despite the APC's antics.
"I was surprised to see issues arising now about next month’s LG poll. Why would anyone wait until this moment to raise objections? OSIEC has already committed significant resources to this election, and all political parties, including the APC, had previously expressed confidence in the Hassim Abioye-led commission," Odeyemi stated.
He further emphasized that APC representatives participated in preparatory meetings with OSIEC and raised no objections at the time. The NNPP chairman criticized attempts to derail the process, calling it a setback to grassroots democracy and local government autonomy.
Dr. Odeyemi also called on OSIEC to ensure the election is conducted credibly and to resist pressure or blackmail from any political party.
