NLC Condemns Ajaero's Arrest, Demands Immediate Release
The Nigerian government has apprehended the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Joe Ajaero, while he was travelling to the United Kingdom to attend a global workers' meeting. In response, the NLC has commenced a private meeting.
This was revealed by the head of public relations, NLC,Benson Upah in an interview with journalists on Monday.
Upah claims that government officials arrested Ajaero illegally without any legal documents and that they do not know where Ajaero is or his current health condition.
The NLC has criticised the arrest as illegal and threatening and has demanded Ajaero’s immediate and unconditional release.
“The Congress also urged the international community, human rights organisations, and democracy supporters to take note of the rising wave of dictatorship in Nigeria.”
Ajaero was set to speak at the Trade Union Congress in the UK in place of Nigerian workers, discussing important issues like workers’ rights, social justice, and economic fairness.
Upah said the NLC has warned its affiliates, state councils, and other supporters to be prepared and has promised to defend workers' rights and not be intimidated by the government.
The Congress is currently discussing the situation privately, and they will announce what they decide soon.
“The NLC is currently holding a closed-door meeting to discuss the situation, and the outcome will be announced soon.”
