The Centre for Cohesion and Development (CCD), a non-governmental organization focused on improving cybersecurity and promoting cyber hygiene has announced an ambitious initiative to generate millions of jobs in information security for Nigeria's youth.
During a recent event attended by selected journalists and civil society members, Dr. Uche Igwe, the Group’s Lead Director, emphasized the increasing global threat of cybercrime as a significant opportunity for young Nigerians to pursue careers in cybersecurity, thereby addressing the existing skills gap in the sector.
Dr. Igwe highlighted a critical shortage of cybersecurity professionals worldwide, noting that an estimated four million new professionals are needed each year.
He stated, "We plan to ensure that Nigeria contributes 500,000 talented individuals to that pool annually, aiming for a total of three million jobs over the next six years."
To facilitate this initiative, CCD is organizing the Abuja Dialogue on Cybersecurity, which seeks to engage relevant stakeholders, including government officials and civil society representatives.
Dr. Igwe remarked on the potential of Nigeria's youth, stating, "They possess exceptional talent. With the right training and guidance, we can redirect the energy some of them currently invest in cybercrime into productive avenues."
The organization has also announced a change in the date for the Abuja Dialogue, now scheduled for September 3rd and 4th at BON Elvis Hotel in Wuse 2.
This postponement is intended to accommodate nationwide protests planned for August 1st. The organizing committee, represented by Deputy Chairman Ibrahim Lawal, expressed regret for any inconvenience this may cause participants and delegates.
In collaboration with the Nigerian Police National Cybercrime Centre (NPF-NCCC) and supported by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), the dialogue aims to foster discussions on building a robust domestic cybersecurity workforce capable of contributing both locally and internationally.
