Nigeria @ 64: Ohanaeze Calls for Political Pardon for Nnamdi Kanu
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, has pleaded to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to grant political pardon to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, (MNK) the incarcerated leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), during the commemoration of Nigeria’s 64th Independence anniversary.
In a recent interview in Awka, the state capital Ohanaeze's National Vice President, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene, argued that Kanu’s freedom would help restore peace, permit the government to pinpoint those continuing violence, and effectively end the troubling sit-at-home practice in the Southeast geopolitical region.
“Our major demand this period is for the President to seize this moment of commemoration to grant political amnesty to our son, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, presently held in DSS detention,” Okeke-Ogene reiterated.
He stressed that Ohanaeze trusts in Nigeria’s democracy and that Kanu’s freedom would promote peace and unity among all Nigerians living in Igbo land. “We also advise South East governors to strengthen the security architecture and enhance the well-being of the people in the region,” he stated.
While urging President Tinubu to take immediate action that would bring comfort to millions of Nigerians going through insecurity, hunger, and other socio-economic problems, Okeke-Ogene complained that the country is still developing at a slow pace.
