NCC Suspends Issuance of Virtual Operator Licences And Two Others
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has announced that the granting of new licenses to operators in three categories would be temporarily suspended.
The license categories are Value Added Service Aggregator License, Interconnect Exchange License, and Mobile Virtual Network Operator License.
A Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) is a business that uses the network of a licensed mobile operator to offer mobile services under its brand name without having a mobile spectrum license. There are now at least 25 of these operators in Nigeria.
This will allow for a complete evaluation of the market saturation, level of competition, and current market dynamics.
The Interconnect Exchange Licence makes it possible to link more than two separate organisations in order to simplify the flow of electronic communications.
Value-Added Service (VAS) Aggregators offer a range of non-core network telecommunication services that go beyond regular voice calls. These services include voicemail, internet access, prepaid calling cards, directory assistance, paging, content services, call centre services, and vehicle tracking.
The NCC's judgement is based on its powers under the Nigerian Communications Act 2003, which enables it to issue and renew licences, encourage fair competition, and grow the communications industry.
The suspension, which takes effect on May 17, 2024, does not impact ongoing applications, which will be examined on merit.
Stakeholders should submit any questions or requests for clarification about the suspension notice to licensing@ncc.gov.ng.
