The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern ultimatum to state governments, demanding full implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage by December 1, 2024.

Failure to comply will result in an indefinite strike beginning on that date, as announced in a communiqué following the NLC's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed deep frustration over the ongoing delays and outright refusals by some state governments to adhere to the 2024 National Minimum Wage Act.

He characterized these actions as both illegal and immoral, highlighting the plight of workers who are increasingly burdened by rising inflation and economic hardship. "This betrayal by certain governors and government officials flies in the face of both legality and morality," Ajaero stated, emphasizing that many workers are being denied their rightful wages amid escalating living costs.

The NLC also condemned the Federal Government's perceived anti-people policies, which it claims are exacerbating poverty and pushing millions into destitution.

Ajaero noted that workers are often forced to choose between basic necessities like food and healthcare, with some suffering from nutrition-related diseases due to financial strain.

In response to these challenges, the NLC plans to establish a National Minimum Wage Implementation Committee tasked with assessing compliance across states and mobilizing public awareness campaigns. The union is committed to initiating industrial actions in non-compliant states until the minimum wage is fully implemented nationwide.

Ajaero called for immediate governmental interventions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerian citizens, urging for comprehensive social protection policies that ensure a living wage reflective of current economic realities.
