A media personality, Adesuwa Onyenokwe, has discussed the pros and cons of social media on modern relationships and communication engagements.
She made this known during a speech at the 23rd Memorial Lecture in honour of the late Margaret Baire Adebija on Tuesday. Onyenokwe stressed how social media platforms facilitate connections across geographical boundaries and time zones.
“Social media can connect people from anywhere in the world, but it can also damage close relationships if people share too much or expect too much perfection,” she asserted.
The speaker also shared memories, and tributes to the late Adebija, stressing the essence of cherishing memories and celebrating lives and legacies.
Family and friends In a tribute to the late Margaret Baire, Adebija spoke of her generous spirit, her passion for her work, and the lasting influence she had on them. They emphasised the importance of honouring her life and the positive mark she left behind. Offering comfort and support to the family, they shared their sorrow and fond memories.
Adesuwa Onyenokwe, while speaking on the topic “Managing Key Relationships in the Age of Social Media," cautioned that sharing too much and portraying an idealised life online can damage our close relationships.
She spoke about several negative effects associated with social media use, like privacy issues, misinformation, and addiction. She said it's important to be genuine online and set realistic goals.
She also said it's important to balance social media with real life. She suggested having face-to-face talks and putting phones away during meals.
Social media is for connecting and sharing, but users should remember that it's not always real. A true connection is more important than a follower count.
Onyenokwe also talked about how comparing oneself to the best online moments of others can hurt relationships and self-esteem.
She advises people to use social media thoughtfully and create content that is real.
