The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has issued a stern warning to property owners, agents, and private occupiers regarding illegal recycling and scavenging activities occurring in unlicensed facilities. Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director of LAWMA, emphasized the need for compliance in a statement released on Friday.

Dr. Gbadegesin urged stakeholders to cease indiscriminate sorting, dumping, storing, and trading of recyclable waste both within their properties and in surrounding public areas. He highlighted that such practices not only mar the city’s visual appeal but also infringe upon the rights of property owners and pose significant environmental risks.

Observing a troubling increase in unauthorized waste sorting and trading, Dr. Gbadegesin pointed out that these actions contravene the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017. He made it clear that LAWMA would enforce strict penalties against individuals or entities found engaging in illegal recycling or scavenging.

According to the law's provisions, specifically Part III, Sections 85 and 86, depositing recyclable waste in undesignated areas is strictly forbidden. Dr. Gbadegesin affirmed that LAWMA is prepared to take necessary actions to ensure compliance, which may include prosecuting offenders and shutting down illegal operations.

He stressed that allowing unauthorized recycling or scavenging on private properties could lead to severe legal repercussions for property owners, including potential revocation of property rights. Furthermore, he called upon residents and stakeholders to utilize only licensed recycling facilities and registered waste collectors to promote effective waste management practices.

To facilitate reporting of illegal activities, Dr. Gbadegesin encouraged residents to reach out through LAWMA’s official communication channels.

He reiterated the agency's commitment to fostering a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos while emphasizing the collective responsibility of all residents in adhering to waste management regulations.
