The Lagos State Task Force has issued a stern warning to residents against hosting events on public roads, which disrupt traffic and inconvenience other road users.
The agency announced that it will prosecute individuals who violate state laws prohibiting such gatherings.
This warning follows the recent arrest of five individuals along Raymond Njoku Road in Ikoyi, who were apprehended for obstructing the road during a birthday celebration. The arrests were detailed by the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who confirmed that those arrested included the event planner, the celebrant, a musician, and others involved in the party.
Wahab emphasized that these offenders will face legal action for their actions, reiterating that no one is above the law in Lagos State. He highlighted the government's commitment to enforcing regulations that ensure public safety and order.
Raheem Gbadeyan, spokesperson for the Lagos Task Force, reinforced this message, stating that the agency is taking a zero-tolerance approach to road blockages for social events.
He pointed out that such practices have been increasing and are unacceptable as they hinder the free movement of people and vehicles.
Chairman of the Task Force, Adetayo Akerele, noted that similar unauthorized events have been reported in various locations across Lagos, including Yaba and Ijaye Ojokoro. He urged those involved in organizing such gatherings to cease immediately or face serious consequences.
The Task Force is collaborating with other security agencies to monitor and enforce compliance with these regulations.
Residents are encouraged to utilize designated event centers for their celebrations and report any road obstructions through the Task Force’s "See Something, Say Something" initiative.
