

The Lagos State Safety Commission has sanctioned Julius Berger Nigeria Plc following an investigation into the death of Olalekan Oloruntoba, a construction engineer who died while operating a crane at an Ijora Yard facility on September 23, 2024.
Initial reports suggested that Oloruntoba's death was caused by the collapse of a loaded crane, but the commission's findings indicated that he sustained fatal injuries from the impact of contents being offloaded from a container.
The investigation was prompted which had garnered attention due to graphic images of Oloruntoba’s lifeless body circulating online.
The report clarified that Oloruntoba was overseeing the unloading of a 40-foot freight container when the contents shifted unexpectedly, causing them to fall and strike him.
While specific details about the sanctions imposed on Julius Berger were not disclosed, Lanre Mojola, the commission’s CEO, stated that the company must fulfill certain regulatory requirements as a result of this incident.
The commission has mandated Julius Berger to enhance staff training and revise its risk assessment procedures to prevent future occurrences.
In addition to these measures, Julius Berger is required to conduct a comprehensive review of its job hazard analysis and work procedures related to loading and offloading activities.
A training program focusing on safety protocols will be implemented for all employees involved in these operations.
Oloruntoba was remembered fondly by friends and colleagues on social media, with many expressing their shock and grief over his untimely passing.
He had previously worked with Julius Berger during his undergraduate studies and was employed full-time after completing his National Youth Service Corps.
