The Lagos State Government has confirmed its decision to increase boarding fees in its model colleges, despite protests from parents. The new fee of N100,000 per term, effective from the 2024/2025 session, replaces the N35,000 previously charged since 2021.
Ganiu Lawal, Deputy Director of Public Affairs in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, explained that the increase is necessary to ensure students' welfare, covering costs like feeding, janitorial services, and power for meal preparation. He noted that boarding students make up a small percentage of the state’s student population, and the rise aligns with the current economic realities.
The government urged parents to understand that the decision, though difficult, prioritizes the well-being of the children.
Lawal also emphasized that the schools provide several benefits, including free tuition, technology support, and payment of terminal examination fees.
