Just In: EFCC Denies Yahaya Bello's Arrest
There have been conflicting reports about the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello's status with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as the commission denied arresting him.
A recent report by journalists indicated that Bello was taken into custody by the EFCC on Wednesday in Lokoja and was detained at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to a source, the former governor, who claimed to have voluntarily honoured the commission’s invitation, was actually trailed and apprehended by EFCC agents in Lokoja on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, issued a press statement denying Bello’s apprehension, stating that Bello is still wanted for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges.
Also, Bello’s media office had earlier issued a press release stating that he had voluntarily honoured the commission’s invitation.
The press statement from Ohiare Michael, Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office read, “Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, today honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
This decision was made after consulting with his family, legal team, and political supporters.
The former governor, who values the law and legal institutions, had always focused on upholding his legal rights and ensuring a fair process.
The case has been heard in a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has had legal representation at all court sessions.
