IPAC Commends Conduct of Enugu Council Election
The Interparty Advisory Council (IPAC) of Enugu State has approved the conduct of the Local Government Council Elections organised on Saturday, September 21, 2024 tagging the exercise as free, fair, credible, and peaceful.
IPAC also lauded the outstanding voter turnout.
In an initial statement made available by State Chairman Obioma Nnamani and State Secretary Dr. Afam Ani in Enugu yesterday, the council commended the lack of political intervention during the election, advising both winners and losers to partner for the development of Enugu State.
“IPAC sent supervisors to all 17 local governments in Enugu State to supervise the September 21, 2024 local government election. This is in line with its mission to endorse peaceful, fair, and transparent elections that follow the law.
“IPAC's first report indicates that there was no violence during the election, and it was very peaceful. This is a big step forward for our elections, and we applaud our leaders, stakeholders, and security agencies for their hard work.
Meanwhile, there was great compliance to legal provisions by the Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) during the Saturday elections.
“IPAC noticed that election materials were late in some places, which was partly because of heavy rain early in the morning.
Similarly, some isolated infractions have been reported by our inspector, which we are currently investigating.
“The whole exercise was transparent, fair, and credible.
“We urge both the winners and losers to work together to improve Enugu State and make it a good place to live. We also encourage anyone who feels they were treated unfairly to use the legal system to resolve the issue,” says the statement.
IPAC also urged for ongoing political education to strengthen citizens to hold their newly elected leaders responsible.
“Elections are vital for democracy because they permit people to exercise their fundamental right to choose their leaders. But they are not the only thing that matters in a democracy,” IPAC stated.
