This decision has been taken in line with the government's choice for a low-key celebration, as economic times are challenging, both at the national and family levels. Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, clarified this during a press conference in Abuja.

He mentioned, "Low-keyed celebration has nothing to do with whether we’re not doing well. Economic times are hard, we are looking at it not just at the national level but also as a family. We have not invited world leaders." He compared this to the previous inauguration of the President when 53 world leaders were invited.

Akume also highlighted the theme of the anniversary: "Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity."

He stressed the importance of national unity and peaceful coexistence, stating, "We have all agreed to live in a united, peaceful, and prosperous country, despite our diversity. Without these, no nation can move forward."

Akume emphasized that the celebration is particularly significant at this time because of Nigeria's unbroken democratic record since 1999 and the successful presidential transition program. He recognized the economic challenges faced by Nigerians and mentioned the government's efforts to provide palliatives and ease transportation hardship, among other initiatives.

Akume concluded by listing the programs lined up for the event, including an anniversary symposium/public lecture, a lecture, Juma’at prayer, a presidential broadcast, an inter-denominational church service, and a military parade.

He called on media professionals and patriots to support the administration and build a partnership to transform the country into the land of their dreams, urging them to publicize the activities marking Nigeria's 63rd Independence anniversary.
