The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has sent additional detectives to Benue State to aid in the rescue of the abducted medical students.
This comes after 20 students from the University of Maiduguri and University of Jos, who were travelling to Enugu for the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students annual convention, were kidnapped on Thursday along the Otukpo/Otukpa/Enugu road.
Egbetokun had earlier ordered the prompt deployment of a substantial number of human and technical resources to augment the manpower of the Benue State Command which involves the mobilization of additional tactical units, the deployment of advanced helicopters, drones, and specialized tactical vehicles to facilitate the search and secure the safe return of the victims.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the police boss has sent more detectives to the state and called for the support of citizens.
Adejobi commended those who have been providing vital information confidentially and urged those disclosing such on social media to desist, as it may disrupt ongoing operations.
The University of Jos Alumni Association, Plateau State chapter, has also condemned the abduction and called for the release of the 12 students from the institution who were among those kidnapped.
Meanwhile, the police in Enugu State have confirmed the kidnapping of three students from the Enugu State College of Health Technology, Oji-River, and have rescued two of them, while three others are still missing.
