The National Senior Citizens Center strongly condemned a recent incident in which a 70-year-old man was buried alive in the Ihwakar Kumekor Dam in Benue's Konshisha Local Government Area.
This information can be found in a statement made by the centre's Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Omini Oden, in Abuja.
The incident is allegedly the work of some suspected youngsters in the Mbatue Ward of the Council Area, according to Dr Emem Omokaro, Director-General of the NSCC.
Omokaro referred to the behaviour as abhorrent and the height of a human rights violation that cannot go unpunished.
However, the DG praised the Nigeria Police and the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons and Other Related Matters for their quick action, which resulted in the suspects' immediate arrest.
She gave Nigerians her word that the centre would keep up its defence of senior citizens' rights and benefits following its mission.
“The National Senior Citizens Centre Anti Elder Abuse Community Response Mechanism, is working in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission, the Legal Aids Council of Nigeria and NAPTIP, to stem the abuse and violence against older persons, as well as provide access to justice,” she said.
She urged the public to contact the NAPTIP toll-free numbers 07030000203, 080-CALLNAPTIP, and MTN 627 and *627# to report incidents of abuse or violence against senior citizens in Nigeria.
