The Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, has announced the approval of an N80,000 minimum wage for Enugu workers, effective October 2024.

Mbah made the disclosure through a statement via his X (formally Twitter) handle on Thursday, marking a significant development for workers in Enugu.

The statement reads, “I have just approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for Enugu workers, effective October 2024.

“We commend the hard work and sacrifices of the state's workforce and will continue to prioritise their wellbeing in line with our campaign promises “Tomorrow is here,” says the statement.

Meanwhile, the governor's decision follows similar moves in other states.

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom also announced an N80,000 minimum wage for civil servants on Wednesday, October 23, 2024.

Similarly, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State on October 16, 2024 increased the minimum wage at N85,000 for public sector workers, while Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State approved an N85,000 minimum wage on October 18.

It would be recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in July signed a new minimum wage bill into law, increasing the baseline salary for workers from N30,000 to N70,000.
