Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has called for the devolution of power to states, arguing that decentralizing governance would better address Nigeria’s economic challenges, including inflation.
Governor Adeleke made this call during an event in Osun State, emphasizing that the current centralization of powers and responsibilities is ineffective in tackling the country's economic woes. He noted that shifting many items from the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list would enable states to manage them more efficiently.
“At the National Economic Council meetings, the federal and state governments regularly brainstorm on solutions to the economic hardship, unemployment, and hyperinflation facing the nation. Several options are being explored,” Adeleke said. “For us as a state, we believe the solution lies in the devolution of powers and financing to state governments. There is an urgent need to move many items on the exclusive legislative list to the concurrent list. The states are better positioned to handle many items for which the centre is presently responsible.”
He encouraged the graduating students at the event to view the current economic turbulence in the country as an opportunity to be innovative and enterprising, which would help them build a prosperous future.
