Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State inaugurated the newly elected local government chairmen who surfaced following Saturday’s council elections in the state on Sunday.

Shortly after the swearing-in at Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt, Governor Fubara affirmed that the emergence of the new local government leaders marks a new era for the state.

He also used the opportunity to appreciate the President of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for being a true democrat in the manner in which he tackled the recent happenings in Rivers State.

The Rivers State Governor also thanked the PDP governors, the leadership of the party, the stakeholders, and the whole people of Rivers State for their assistance.

“I must commend the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for being a democrat. Without his assistance, we wouldn’t be here today. Even in the face of the challenges that confronted us, he still gave us all the assistance. So, I appreciate him on behalf of the good citizens of Rivers State.”

Fubara announced that he remains a loyal member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in spite of endorsing the Action Peoples Party (APP), whose chairmanship candidates won 22 LGAs, while the Action Alliance (AA) won one LGA.

The Governor said, “I’m so glad that the chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum is here to witness this inauguration ceremony. I want to promise you that I still remain a member of the PDP.

“Desperate challenges require desperate measures. We were faced with a challenge where the local government of the state was heading to catastrophe. And the truth about it is that what we did was to rescue the local government council.”

Governor Siminalayi Fubara, while urging the new council chairmen to see their new office as an avenue to serve the people, also charged them with the advancement of their different LGAs and running a peaceful, all-inclusive, transparent, and accessible government.

He charged them to embrace his government’s philosophy of fostering peace and love and offer resolute leadership at the local level, as well as delivering people-orientated projects and programs.

The Governor also accused allies of the FCT Minister, Senator Nesom Wike, of planning to interrupt the peace of the state by staging protests across the state on Sunday, charging the new chairmen to remain peaceful.
