The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has extended condolences to the families of victims and the Jigawa State government following a tragic tanker explosion that claimed numerous lives in Majiya.
In a statement released on Wednesday from the office of the Corps Public Education Officer in Abuja, FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed expressed his sorrow and solidarity with those affected.
He emphasized that his thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families and residents of Jigawa State.
The incident, which occurred late Tuesday night, resulted in the deaths of at least 147 individuals who were reportedly scooping fuel from a fallen tanker. Eyewitnesses indicated that the explosion ignited as villagers rushed to collect Premium Motor Spirit from the wreckage shortly after the tanker overturned.
The tanker, registered as KMC 6412 F, was en route from Kano to Nguru, Yobe State, when the driver lost control while attempting to navigate a speed bump at high speed.
Mohammed highlighted the critical need for adherence to safety regulations, urging road users to exercise caution and await assistance from FRSC emergency teams during such incidents.
He warned that individuals should maintain a safe distance from any overturned tankers due to the highly flammable nature of the contents.
The FRSC has initiated an investigation into the crash and directed Commanding Officers at tank farms to ensure compliance with safety standards for all vehicles transporting flammable materials.
Meanwhile, injured victims have been transported to various hospitals, including Ringim General Hospital and Jahun General Hospital, for urgent medical care.
The local government chairman, Shu’aibu Hambali, confirmed the rising death toll during a live broadcast on Arewa Radio, where he also noted that a mass burial was conducted for the victims.
