
A former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a distinguished military officer, Lt. Gen. Jeremiah Useni (retd.), has passed on at the age of 82.
Useni’s death was announced on Thursday by the Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, in a press release made available through his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere.
It was gathered that he died after a prolonged illness.
Governor Mutfwang expressed grief at the loss, relating Useni’s death as an immense loss to his family, Plateau State, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation.
“The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, deeply regrets to announce to the people of Plateau State and all patriotic Nigerians the passing of the former minister,” the statement reads.
The governor commended Useni’s exceptional leadership, emphasising his dedication to public service, peace, and security, especially in northern Nigeria and Plateau State.
Useni served Nigeria in various capacities during his career, including as Minister of Transport, Quartermaster General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT.
After his service in the military came to an end, he pursued a political career. He held prominent positions, including Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party. In 2015, he was elected to the Senate representing Plateau South as a member of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Governor Mutfwang praised Useni for a life of selfless service, noting his contributions to the military, governance, and community.
He stated that the late General's legacy, characterised by compassion, generosity, and steadfast commitment, would serve as a beacon of inspiration for those to come.
