Thousands of residents in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, and parts of the Jere local government area are facing significant challenges due to the recent overflow of the Alau Dam, located approximately 10 kilometers from the city.
The situation has escalated following the collapse of the dyke, leading to widespread flooding that has displaced many families.
In response to the crisis, the Borno State Government, under the leadership of Secretary to the Government Bukar Tijjani, conducted an assessment of the dam's condition.
Officials reassured the public that there was no immediate cause for alarm and that measures would be implemented to address the situation.
However, despite these assurances, water has continued to flow into the city since Monday evening, exacerbating the flooding.
The impact of the flooding has been severe, affecting numerous communities, including the Shehu’s palace, Monday Market, and various residential areas such as Gwange and Moromoro Customs Bridge.
The flooding has submerged homes and disrupted daily life, prompting urgent calls for evacuation from local authorities.
In Yobe State, the situation is similarly dire, with only five out of 17 local government areas remaining accessible to the state capital, Damaturu.
Flooding has rendered major roads and bridges impassable, isolating communities and causing extensive damage to infrastructure and property.
The Borno State Police have issued a statement advising residents to avoid flooded areas and seek safer locations. ASP Kenneth Daso emphasized that law enforcement and relevant agencies are working diligently to ensure the safety of lives and property amid the ongoing crisis.
