FG Vows Clampdown on Officials Leaking Sensitive Documents

The Federal Government, led by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, has embarked on a series of proactive measures aimed at staunching the flow of sensitive official documents into the public domain. 

In a memo dated February 19, 2024, Dr. Folashade Yemi-Esan, the Head of Civil Service, expressed deep concern regarding the persistent leakage of such documents, labeling it as both embarrassing and unacceptable for the government.

The memo underscored the urgency of the situation, highlighting a noticeable uptick in cases across various ministries, departments, and agencies.

Dr. Yemi-Esan emphasized the need for immediate action, stressing the importance of transitioning to a digitalized workflow system to bolster security measures. Permanent Secretaries were tasked with ensuring the swift implementation of this system, coupled with stringent measures to deter and penalize any staff found culpable of leaking official information.

Furthermore, the memo cautioned against the dissemination of leaked documents, warning of severe consequences in line with established Public Service Rules and other relevant circulars. 

This firm stance reflects the government's commitment to upholding transparency and safeguarding sensitive information.

The memo's release comes in the wake of several high-profile leaks, notably regarding budget allocations and subsidy plans. 

For instance, a recent memo from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation unveiled plans to allocate a substantial sum for allowances to members of a tripartite committee on minimum wage. 

Similarly, another leak purportedly originating from the Minister of Finance's office outlined sizable subsidies earmarked for the Hajj pilgrimage.

These revelations have elicited widespread outrage from civil society organizations and organized labor, prompting calls for thorough investigations into the allocation processes. The leaks not only undermine public trust but also raise concerns about accountability and fiscal responsibility within the government.

In light of these developments, the Head of Civil Service's memo serves as a decisive response, signaling a concerted effort to address systemic vulnerabilities and reinforce safeguards against future breaches.
