The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to construct a "super grid" to address the ongoing issues with national grid collapses, according to Bolaji Tunji—media aide for Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu.

Minister Adelabu, who is currently attending the China-Africa Cooperation Summit, expressed concerns about the current state of the national grid, stating that it lacks the capacity and structure necessary to support the government's vision for the power sector.

He emphasized the need for both Western and Eastern super grids to enhance the transmission network, stabilize the grid, and increase its capacity and flexibility.

Adelabu noted that significant progress has been made, with 90% of the necessary approvals already in place, and he expects the project to be finalized soon.

He highlighted the historical context of Nigeria's power challenges, referencing a previous call for a super grid by former Minister of Power Barth Nnaji, who advocated for a 765KV network to replace the existing 330KV system. Nnaji pointed out that the current grid's inadequacies have contributed to frequent power outages.

The chairman of Geometric Power commended Adelabu for reviving the super grid project, which aims to improve the reliability of Nigeria's power transmission infrastructure. As reported, the national grid has suffered multiple collapses in 2024, leaving many Nigerians without electricity.
