FG Orders Evacuation as Devastating Flood Hits Ondo
Properties valued worth millions of naira were severely damaged by the flood that struck Ondo town in Ondo State, on Friday.
The flood followed a prolonged period of heavy rainfall, which lasted several hours and inundated various neighbourhoods, including Itanla, Oka, Odo Ijomu, Bethlehem, and the Akure-Ondo Expressway.
Numerous homes and vehicles were submerged, forcing many residents to evacuate their properties. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities resulting from this incident.
In response to the flooding, the state government has initiated evacuation orders for affected areas and launched rapid response efforts to mitigate further damage. Environment Commissioner Oyeniyi Oseni released a statement on Saturday confirming these actions and outlining the government's plans to address the situation.
The government has deployed amphibious excavators to critical erosion-prone areas for dredging purposes. Oseni noted that the flooding could be linked to unauthorized developments along waterways in an estate at Fagun and the Ife Road area.
He emphasized that his ministry would work with relevant governmental bodies to tackle these unlawful constructions to prevent future flooding events.
