The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a travel advisory urging citizens to exercise caution when traveling to the United Kingdom due to escalating violence linked to recent events.
This alert was communicated in a statement released on August 5, 2024, by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The advisory highlights a significant increase in violence and disorder following the tragic deaths of three young girls during a concert, which has sparked widespread protests and riots across the UK.
The situation has escalated, with reports of attacks on law enforcement and damage to public infrastructure. The government emphasizes that these disturbances have been exacerbated by the deaths, which have fueled anti-immigrant sentiments, particularly targeting Muslim immigrants and people of color.
The Nigerian government advises its citizens to remain vigilant and take specific precautions. These include avoiding political demonstrations, protests, rallies, and large gatherings, as well as being aware of their surroundings at all times.
Citizens are also encouraged to reach out to the Nigerian High Commission in the UK for any necessary assistance.
