The Federal Government has made significant efforts to improve the operational efficiency and utilisation of Eastern ports, which is expected to spark regional economic growth and development.
Adeboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, made the news while commissioning a 4.8km Road "D" project and six mooring boats at Onne Complex in Rivers State, highlighting the government's commitment to maximizing the maritime sector's potential.
The inauguration of the road infrastructure and marine crafts at the Onne Complex demonstrates the Federal Government's determination to address the long-standing issues of underutilization at Eastern ports.
According to Minister Oyetola, these efforts are part of a larger plan to capitalise on the strategic benefits of port complexes such as Onne, improving maritime security, safety, and overall efficiency. This infrastructure development corresponds with the Presidential Performance Bond's Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), which aim for a more vibrant and productive port system.
Oyetola emphasised the need to boost investor confidence and create an enabling environment for the Eastern Ports of Onne, Rivers, Warri, and Calabar. The accreditation of the Onne and Calabar Port Complexes by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) was cited as a notable success, demonstrating the government's commitment to fulfilling international standards.
This road serves as a crucial link to new berths and reclaimed land leased for port development, which is expected to open up new economic possibilities and increase income creation for Nigeria, and it highlights the NPA and Federal Government's coordinated effort to realising the untapped potential of the Onne Port Complex and other Eastern ports.
