On Sunday, at around 10 a.m., a stampede occurred at the Shafa Holdings Company Plc headquarters on Jos Road, Bauchi State, killing four women.
It was said that the gathering, comprising mostly women, had assembled for the delivery of Zakat items by a Bauchi-based philanthropist.
The distribution was alleged to have started peacefully, with recipients gathering in groups to get gifts, until unrest among others resulted in a battle to gain entry to the venue.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, three more women have died as a result of the stampede, bringing the total number of deaths to seven.
SP Ahmed Wakili, the Command's spokesperson, said in a phone interview with journalists on Monday that two women died at the Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), while the third one died at home.
He identified the deceased as Aisha Usman, 13, Sahura Abubakar, 55, Aisha Ibrahim Abubakar, 43, both from Kobi Street in Bauchi, and Khadija Isah, 8, from Karofi Bauchi.
The others are Maryam Suleiman, 20, of Kandahar Bauchi; Maryam Shuibu, 16, of Gwang Gwan Gwan Bauchi; and Hassana Saidu, 53, of Dutsen Tanshi Bauchi.
