In a suit filed in the Benin City High Court, Ambrose Alli University Chapter of ASUU has challenged Governor Godwin Obaseki’s directive suspending all unions in tertiary institutions.
The suit named ASUU chairman, AAU chapter Dr Cyril Onogbosele; Assistant Secretary, Dr William Odion; and Obaseki (as the state Attorney General) as plaintiffs while the defendants were Edo State government.
The ASUU and AAU chapter, in a motion filed before the court sought an injunction restraining Ambrose Alli University from implementing its directive suspending trade union activities at Ekpoma campus.
“A declaration that the defendants have no power whatsoever to interfere or intermeddle with the claimants’ exercise of their rights, as members of a registered trade union, Academic Staff Union of Universities to engage in trade union activities at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
“An order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, their servants, employees and/or agents from interfering with or intermeddling in the claimants’ exercise of their fundamental right to engage in trade union activities at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.
Justice A. A. Adewemimo, delivering judgment on a petition challenging the suspension of trade union activities at the AAU and other tertiary institutions in Edo State, ruled that it was wrong for state government to have suspended such activities.
