The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured corps members that their monthly stipends will be increased from the current N33,000 once the Federal Government implements the new minimum wage.
This was announced during the visit of the Director General, Yusha'u Ahmed to the 2024 Batch 'B' stream two orientation camps in Kebbi and Sokoto states, he assured the corps members' that their monthly stipends will be increased once the Federal Government implements the new minimum wage of N70,000.
Ahmed emphasized the invaluable contributions of corps members to the country's socio-economic development and urged them to use their service year to develop themselves and plan for a brighter future.
He encouraged corps members to take advantage of the NYSC skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development program, advising them to learn a skill that would enable them to create jobs and employ others.
The NYSC has partnered with various organizations, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Unity Bank, Access Bank, and NNPC Foundation, to provide loans and grants to corps members.
Ahmed assured corps members of their safety throughout their service year, stating that they would be posted to secure locations while advising them to remain vigilant in their surroundings.
The NYSC coordinators in Kebbi and Sokoto states, Aghata Banki-Okolo and Yakubu Usman respectively, praised the corps members for their discipline and swift adaptation to the camp environment.
In July 2024, the organised labour sector agreed to a new minimum wage of N70,000 after negotiations with the federal government. The bill raising Nigeria's minimum wage from N30,000 to N70,000 was passed by the National Assembly on July 23 and signed into law on July 29.
