On Tuesday, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, directed the Theatre Commander to grant all necessary help to the flood victims in Borno.

Heavy flooding has covered major roads, homes, and shops across Maiduguri, Borno State Capital, as well as parts of Jere Local Government Area.

The rising floodwaters breached the prison wall in the Customs area, leading to reports of drowning inmates and a mass escape.

The Chief of Defence Staff, in a statement released by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, expressed sadness over the incident.

He promised the residents that the military would collaborate with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and other important agencies to offer immediate assistance and support to the impacted communities.

The statement read, “The CDS was deeply saddened by the loss of life, property damage, and displacement of thousands of people due to the flooding from Alo Dam. On behalf of the entire Nigerian Armed Forces, the Chief of Defence Staff wishes to express his sincere condolences to the bereaved families who have lost loved ones, the government, and the people of Borno State at this difficult time.

“General Musa also promised that the Nigerian Armed Forces would collaborate closely with NEMA and other relevant agencies to deliver immediate assistance and support to the impacted communities. He also ordered the theatre commander of Operation Hadin Kai to provide all necessary aid to the victims.

The AFN expresses its solidarity with the people of Borno State and will guarantee the safe evacuation of all affected communities. In addition, it will support the ongoing rescue and rehabilitation operations. The CDS remains dedicated to the efforts of both the Federal and Borno state governments to mitigate the suffering of those impacted by this tragic event.
