The Management of the Abia State University Uturu, ABSU, has confirmed the abduction of its Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Godwin Emezue.
ABSU Registrar, Dr Acho Elendu who confirmed it to Vanguard, described it as very unfortunate.
He opined that information was still sketchy about the incident but added that the incident took place around his village.
According to reports, some unidentified gunmen abducted the DVC at a filling station around Umuekwule, Amachara in Umuahia South Local Government Area where he had gone to buy fuel.
He was said to be with the wife when the incident occurred.
According to eyewitnesses' accounts, Prof Emezue was whisked away by no fewer than three men that accosted him at the fuel station, dragged him into an already waiting Lexus SUV and collected his wife’s ATM card.
The wife was quoted as saying that the abductors of her husband sped off and raced towards the Imo-Abia border towards the Malaysian market.
Efforts to contact the police for confirmation were not successful as the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Moureen Chinaka, did not pick calls put across to her.
The Commissioner of Police Kenechukwu Onwuemelie also did not pick calls put across to him.
Kidnapping and other violent crimes have been on the decline in the state in recent times following the successful launch of Operation Crush by the State Government.
